The Registered Respiratory Therapist 1 (RRT 1) provide a full range of cardiopulmonary diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory care services to patients of all age groups. The RRT 1 have successfully achieved and maintained the required competencies and qualifications of this job description and serves as the primary resource to meet the respiratory care needs for the critical care, emergency, trauma and pediatric patient. The RRT 1obtains, reviews, and interprets data and assesses the need for and response to respiratory care interventions in consultation and conjunction with medical, nursing and other disciplines to optimize patient care planning and delivery. Responds to cardiopulmonary emergencies, provides airway maintenance manual, and mechanical ventilator support using a variety of devices and techniques and administers medical gases, humidity therapy, inhaled aerosol medications, bronchial hygiene, lung expansion therapies, and instructs patient's family and continuing care providers in the administration of respiratory procedures and the proper use of respiratory therapy equipment and supplies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • California License Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license
  • National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within six (6) months of hire
  • Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
  • Possess the knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. This includes but is not limited to the ability to perform all of the required procedures and assessments and possession of a thorough understanding of the techniques and rationale for the selection and application of respiratory care procedures.
  • Basic computer skills: data entry, e-mail, E.M.R., Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Current with mandatory competency in all clinical areas assigned to work.
  • Performs basic and advanced cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures and calculations, collects and interprets data to facilitate objective patient assessment and effective care planning. Assists other health care professionals in the interpretation and clinical application of results.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity and a respectful manner toward patients, visitors
  • Demonstrates effectiveness in spoken and written communications.
  • Responsible to be knowledgeable of and comply with all applicable infection control, health and safety policies and procedures as implemented by the department and/or work unit and the Medical Center.
  • Ability to work independently, problem solve and exhibit good time management practices.
  • Current with all mandatory Hospital Competencies.
  • Responsible for maintaining reliable work habits, attendance, and completed assignments. Prioritizes patient's care based on: emergent needs, patient safety, resources available to meet identified needs, routine care.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive and positive working relationships with all team members.
  • Continuing maintenance and development of clinical skills and technical competency in Adult/Pediatric, Emergency and trauma respiratory care, applications, procedures and equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively with intra and inter departmental teams.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements (JCAHO, Title 22, HCFA, CMS)

Respiratory Care is a highly technical and specialized ancillary department at University of California, Davis, Medical Center (UCDMC) providing assessment, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for patients of all ages with critical pulmonary illness and trauma needs.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Must be able to work variable shifts and be "On Call" as needed. Shift include days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
